As more people are turning to remodeling instead of moving — and with the decline in new construction meaning more eager contractors to chose from — it makes sense to know how to choose a contractor. You need is someone who does quality work in a reasonable amount of time, understands exactly what it is you’re looking for, and most importantly that you can trust. Narrowing down the list can be intimidating. A wrong choice can result in a pile of headaches.

Here are a couple of tips to ease the transition from research to hire:

Ask for referrals from friends, family, colleagues, and neighbors. Receiving a referral from someone you know is often the best way to find the right person to do the job.

Verify Insurance and Licensing. Ask to see any applicable state and local licenses, bonding, and insurance coverage. Quality contracting firms will be only too happy to provide you with copies.

Get multiple estimates. Getting multiple bids allows you to compare prices, plus chances are each person or company that comes out will bring up some point or issue that the others left out. Do not blindly accept the lowest offer. Price is only one part of the equation. Remember, as with anything in life, you get what you paid for. Always compare apples to apples.

Ask for references. Past customers can offer valuable insight about the building experience — everything from personality to timeliness to quality. Take the time to follow up on references. If the contractor won’t give you references, find one that will. Go with your gut, you need to trust them.

Get a written contract. It should clearly explain the scope of work being performed to the proposed work, prices and completion date. Read the contract carefully, it serves to protect both you and the contractor. Understand these key points:

Building Permits – What’s necessary? Consider local ordinances, costs, posting requirements.

Start and Completion Dates – including a plan of action in case of weather delays.

Products/Materials – what will be used, brands, colors, etc.

Project Inspections – number of inspections, completion timetable.

Site Procedures – work hours, clean-up procedures and around your home, safety precautions, etc.

Warranties – including both workmanship and product.

Terms – detailed as method of payment to include a lien waiver upon final payment.

Liens – Be aware that under the laws of most states, a contractor who does work on your home, or a supplier of materials for such work, has a right to place a lien on your property. Make sure all essential elements of your agreement are written down and understood by both parties.

Right-to-Rescind – providing the right to cancel the contract without penalty within a set period of time (usually three days).

Take your time. If you take these reasonable and easy steps as listed above, you will significantly lower your risk of a bad experience. You will be turning to your contractor for guidance and his experience in many decisions throughout your building process, so choose one that you trust and feel comfortable with. Good contractors are very eager for your business. They are also very proud of their craftsmanship. Once you have made your selection, step back and give the professional room to execute the project. You have done your homework, so give the professional the opportunity to meet and exceed your expectations. Good Luck!

Earth Day was first conceived by Sen. Gaylord Nelson in the early 1960s. Nelson worried that environmental issues were not being addressed in the political arena. In his conservation efforts, Nelson organized a nationwide grassroots demonstration in the spring of 1970, to further promote conservation involvement and awareness. Support for and interest in the activity was immense and the 1970 demonstration became the first official Earth Day. The first Earth Day helped inspire the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species acts. Each year, April 22 marks the celebration of Earth Day, which is now observed around the world.

Fun Facts About Earth Day

Earth Day Networks estimates that 500 million people from 4,500 organizations in 180 countries will participate in Earth Day events during the month of April.

Earth Day is big with schools. On many school calendars, it is the third most activity-inspiring holiday, after Christmas and Halloween.

Companies have even gotten into Earth Day. Last year, office supply store Staples introduced office paper made entirely without new trees.

As part of the celebration, some communities make Earth Day a “Car-Free Day.”

20 million people participated in the first Earth Day.

More than 100 billion pieces of junk mail are delivered in the United States each year.

The U.S. buried or burned more than 166 million tons of resources – paper, plastic, metals, glass and organic materials – in landfills and incinerators last year.

It only takes about 6 weeks total to manufacture, fill, sell, recycle, and then remanufacture an aluminum beverage can.

Half the world’s tropical and temperate forests are now gone.

More than 2 million people globally die prematurely every year due to outdoor and indoor air pollution.

Every year in the U.S. nearly 200 billion beverage containers are sold, two-thirds of which are landfilled, incinerated or littered.

Recycling, reuse and remanufacturing account for 3.1 million jobs in the U.S.

Recycling saves 3 to 5 times the energy that waste incinerator power plants generate.

By reducing our waste 1% per year and recycling and composting 90% of our discards by 2030, we could save 406 megatons of carbon dioxide equivalent every year. This is the equivalent to shutting down 21% of our nation’s coal-fired power plants.

More than 76% of cardboard boxes and 72% of newspaper were recycled in 2006 but less than 50% of printing and writing paper was recycled.

Attached are three photos of the rail system AGS Stainless, Inc. designed and provided to Rainey Institute for the sound/lighting control booth it constructed in its new theater…

We installed the rail as a safe(t)y measure to reduce the unlikely risk that a rambunctious youngster might fall over the side…

The design and dimensioning turned out to be perfect and the wires, while strong, do not obstruct clear vision. Just what the doctor ordered. Of course, we will do all we can to keep its purpose from being tested.

AGS Stainless, Inc. Clearview® Railing Systems are known for being strong, durable and easy to maintain. Maintaining your Clearview Railing System will preserve it’s attractiveness, prevent corrosion and add to the life of your new railing. The goal of maintaining and cleaning is to keep your stainless steel railing’s protective chromium oxide layer intact – this is what prevents corrosion.

CLEANING

It is recommended that you thoroughly clean your railing right after installation and then periodically, or as necessary. Most chloride-free cleaners (glass cleaners are usually a good choice) or a simple solution of mild soap and water will work. There are also many widely-available products designed specifically for use on stainless steel. For an added level of protection and shine, you can apply a coat of good car wax.

HARSH ENVIRONMENTS

Certain environments (marine, polluted, exposure to corrosive elements, etc.) can be harsh on stainless steel. In these circumstances, being more diligent in your cleaning regimen will help you keep your railing looking beautiful.

A maintenance guide and a non-abrasive pad will be included with all railing orders. If you should notice any discoloration, use the non-abrasive pad to clean the affected area. Be sure to take note of the direction of the grain of the steel.

Additionally, AGS will provide a passivating kit with all exterior railing systems. Treat the area with the passivating fluid (CitriSurf 77 Plus) per the instructions on the bottle to restore the stainless steel’s natural corrosion-resistant layer. The passivating fluid can also be used to remove more stubborn spots.

IMPORTANT!! NEVER use a metallic or coarse abrasives such as steel wool or sandpaper on your railing. This might actually facilitate corrosion or rust.

CABLE TENSION

Periodically inspect your Clearview® Railing System. Any slack in the cables can be taken up in the same manner in which they were originally tensioned (see instructions). Remember, there is no need to tighten the cables more than what is necessary to eliminate any sag

Whether you’re a Homeowner or Renter, warmer weather means more fun activities outside the house, including grilling, swimming and gardening. As your family moves outdoors to enjoy spring and summer knowing these safety tips up front can prevent future problems.

Help keep your backyard hazard-free with these everyday guidelines.

Find and fill holes in your yard. Careless contractors, dying tree roots, or critters making themselves at home can all be culprits in making your yard a mine field for potential injuries. So explore your yard and carefully examine the ground and grass for loose soil and holes that could cause a twisted ankle or broken bone.

Toxins. More than 68,000 people a year are poisoned by plants, reports the American Association of Poison Control Centers. Most end up with nothing worse than an upset stomach or an itchy skin rash. However, some plants can be fatal, especially to pets and small children. Simply doing your homework before choosing backyard vegetation and garden plants can prevent accidents. Remove potential poisons from your yard, including poisonous plants, pesticides and pool chemicals. Teach kids not to handle or eat any part of a plant unless you know it is safe.

Pools, Hot Tubs and Ponds Kids around water require supervision. And if there’s water on your property, you should also have rescue equipment — including a phone — close at hand. Enclose water hazards with fences or walls that are at least four feet high and equipped with self-closing and -latching gates. Securely cover the pool when it’s not in use, and consider a pool alarm as well.

Never swim alone. Regardless of your experience and skill level, you should always swim with a buddy. Children should always be supervised.

Check the pool’s drain and suction covers. If they are missing or broken, repair them immediately. Faulty drains can cause accidental entrapment, which can lead to drowning.

Hot tubs

Always use a locked safety cover when the spa is not in use.

Only allow children in the hot tub if there is constant adult supervision.

Don’t let the water temperature exceed 104 degrees Fahrenheit. This may lead to dizziness, nausea and dehydration.

Know the location of the emergency shut-off switch so the pump can be turned off quickly.

Grills. To ensure your cookout doesn’t go up in flames:

Never leave a grill unattended.

Keep your grill away from the side of your home and other flammable objects.

Regularly check hoses on gas grills for leaks and breaks.

Lawnmowers. To increase the chances that the only thing your lawnmower cuts is the lawn, the Home Safety Council suggests:

Don’t wear clothes that could get caught in a mower’s blade.

Before you mow, check your lawn for broken sticks, stones and toys — or anything else that could shoot out from under the mower. A mower can throw an object at 200 mph, causing serious injury.

After the mowing is done, remember to put all of your lawn and garden tools in a safe place.

Fire Pits.Fire pits have become more popular in recent years. You can find a variety of choices at local department and home-improvement stores with a wide variety of price ranges. But a word of warning: fire pits can spell danger for children without adult supervision.

Check local laws to see if there is a ban or any restrictions on backyard fires.

Ensure that your fire pit is stable. A freestanding fire pit might tip over, causing injury

Stir coals with a shovel to make sure that the flames are out.

Never leave a fire pit unattended and have water nearby.

When roasting marshmallows or hot dogs over the fire, supervise children closely, ensuring that safe materials are used – a metal stick with a wood handle should be used.

Test Tree houes, Jungle Gyms and Swing Sets for safety. Improperly constructed or neglected play structures can cause serious injuries to children.

Make sure the swing set is on a level area and the legs are properly anchored underground and set in concrete. Surround the area under and around swings with a nine-inch depth of shock-absorbing material such as sand, rubber or mulch. Cover protruding bolts on the equipment.

Check tree houses and jungle gyms for sharp screws, bolts, or nails.

Double-check wooden structures to be sure winter weather hasn’t caused them to break down or rot.

Examine the branches that support the tree house. Make sure they’re still sturdy and don’t show any signs of rot or damages.

Trampolines The American Academy of Pediatrics considers the use of trampolines “extremely unwise” because of the potential for serious injury. If you do opt for one, follow these guidelines:

Adults must supervise when children are on a trampoline.

Only allow one child on at a time.

Use a safety net and make sure the springs, hooks and frame are covered by shock-absorbing material.

Show your children proper technique, like to keep knees bent rather than locked when feet hit the surface.

Don’t permit stunts such as flips or somersaults.

Surround the trampoline with sand, rubber or mulch that’s between 9 and 12 inches deep.

Backyard Lighting. Backyard lighting is one way of beautifying your backyard while also serving a practical purpose. In addition to providing extra light so that your backyard can be used after sunset, backyard lighting is also a safety feature, making your home more visible and less likely to be the target of an intruder. Keep in mind, AGS Stainless, Inc. offers lighted rail options!
